Igbokoda Air Crash: NAF Lowers Water Level as Recovery Enters Day 14
The Nigerian Air Force says water levels have fallen significantly at the site of the crashed ATR 42-500 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery operations enter Day 14. However, the recovery remains ongoing, with questions about the crash investigation and environmental safety still unresolved.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has significantly reduced water at the site of its crashed ATR 42-500 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery operations entered their 14th day on Monday, 19 October.

The Air Force said continuous pumping had lowered the water level, allowing teams to work towards removing most of the remaining water. However, it did not announce the completion of the dewatering operation or the recovery of the entire aircraft wreckage.

The aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed into a swamp on 5 October while travelling from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos. All 25 people on board — five crew members and 20 passengers — died, according to the NAF. Reuters reported the crash as one of Nigeria’s major recent military aviation disasters.

Difficult terrain slows recovery

According to the NAF, recovery teams are reinforcing the embankment with sandbags to prevent it from collapsing as they pump water from the site.

The operation requires engineering work and sustained dewatering in difficult conditions. The Air Force has also acknowledged the contributions of partner agencies and Hitech Construction Company.

In its latest statement, the NAF said: “The operation requires sustained engineering and dewatering efforts under challenging conditions, underscoring the scale and complexity of the recovery mission.”

The statement did not provide a completion date for the operation or a detailed breakdown of its costs.

Although the falling water level marks progress, it does not establish how much wreckage remains submerged or when investigators will finish collecting the evidence they need.

What the recovery means for the investigation

The recovery operation matters because investigators need to retrieve and preserve aircraft components and other relevant evidence to establish what caused the crash.

On 13 October, the NAF announced a 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence. Premium Times reported the board’s formation.

The Air Force had also reported the recovery of additional aircraft components through operations involving specialist divers from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).

On 14 October, The Punch reported that the multi-agency team was using underwater searches, hydrographic surveys, satellite-based imagery and mud excavation to locate and retrieve relevant materials. The report is available here.

The latest update does not establish whether investigators have recovered both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, commonly called the black boxes. Their recovery status and any findings from their examination remain important questions for the investigation.

Residents raise environmental concerns

The crash has also raised concerns beyond aviation safety, particularly among residents living near the swamp and connected waterways.

Premium Times has reported concerns from residents about an offensive odour around the crash site, possible contamination of water sources and the recovery of human remains. The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Afolabi Odidiomo, has also raised concerns about possible pollution affecting local water supplies.

These concerns require a clear response from environmental and public health authorities. However, reports of a possible hazard should not be treated as proof that the community’s water has been contaminated.

The Ondo State Government has previously directed its environment and health ministries to intervene, including through fumigation and arrangements to supply potable water if the affected river is found unsuitable for use. It also directed the provision of nose masks and other health kits, according to Premium Times.

The effectiveness of these measures will depend on proper environmental testing, transparent communication of the results and timely action if authorities identify any risk.

If contamination is confirmed, residents could face additional costs and disruption as they seek safe drinking water. If testing finds no contamination, publishing the results would help counter unfounded fears and restore confidence.

Families need answers and clear communication

The crash has left 25 families grieving, while the ongoing recovery operation remains a crucial part of establishing the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The NAF said Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, commended the recovery team for its resilience and professionalism. He also reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to completing the operation safely and methodically while supporting the investigation.

The Air Force said: “The NAF remains deeply conscious of the pain and anguish of the bereaved families and extends its heartfelt condolences to them.”

It added: “The Service remains committed to sustaining recovery efforts and providing timely, verified updates as the operation progresses. It also appreciates the patience and cooperation of the Igbokoda community and the continued support of all stakeholders.”

The statements express the NAF’s position, but the practical test will be whether families receive consistent information about recovery efforts, the investigation and any support available to them.

What happens next?

The immediate priorities are to complete the water-removal work safely, recover and document relevant aircraft components, and preserve evidence for investigators.

Authorities also need to address residents’ environmental concerns through documented water-quality assessments and public updates. Any confirmed health or environmental risks should trigger appropriate protective measures.

The investigation must ultimately explain the circumstances and cause of the crash, identify any safety failures established by the evidence and recommend steps to reduce the risk of similar accidents.

For now, the reduced water level represents progress at the site, not the conclusion of the recovery operation or the investigation. The NAF has not announced a completion date or released a final report on the cause of the crash.
