The Lagos State chapter of the APC Support Group Council has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's bid for a second term and endorsed the party's Lagos governorship candidate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 elections.
The declaration was made by Hon. Omosanya Adeboye, Lagos State Coordinator of the APC Support Group Council, during a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, 7 August 2026.
Hon. Adeboye said the council would intensify grassroots mobilisation for the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling on party members, youth, women, professionals, artisans, traders and other groups to support the party's candidates.
The group said its support for President Tinubu was based on what it described as the administration's economic reforms, infrastructure projects, education initiatives and human-capital development programmes.
It also described Dr Obafemi Kadri Hamzat as the preferred candidate to continue the APC's governance in Lagos.
Dr. Hamzat is already the APC's candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship election.
He emerged from the party's primary in May with 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes, according to reports of the exercise.
Tinubu's record at centre of campaign
In his statement, Hon. Adeboye argued that the Tinubu administration had taken major steps to reshape Nigeria's economy and improve infrastructure.
He cited road construction and rehabilitation, bridges, rail projects, public finance reforms, investment promotion, education, student financing, vocational training, youth empowerment and social investment among the areas in which the government had made progress.
The council said some of the reforms had created short-term difficulties but argued that they were necessary to achieve longer-term economic stability.
That distinction is important as the 2027 election approaches, because claims about economic recovery are likely to be tested against issues that directly affect households, including the cost of living, employment, food prices, electricity and purchasing power.
The support group nevertheless said it believed the administration's policies would produce greater benefits if allowed to continue.
Why the grassroots strategy matters
Several speakers emphasised the need to take the APC's campaign message directly to communities.
Hon. James Fatoyinbo, identified at the event as Director of Foreign Affairs of the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu, said political support groups needed to explain government policies in language ordinary voters could understand.
He argued that some Nigerians were aware of the government but could not clearly identify or explain its policies and achievements.
“We need to take it right to the grassroots, to let them understand what this man has done and what he's yet to do for this country.”
The emphasis on grassroots mobilisation reflects the increasingly important role of political support organisations in Nigeria's election campaigns.
Rather than relying solely on rallies involving party leaders, such groups seek to build support through wards, communities, professional associations and other local networks.
Hamzat's 2027 campaign
The council also expressed confidence in Hamzat's ability to lead Lagos, describing him as experienced, competent and capable of continuing the state's development trajectory under the APC.
Hamzat's candidacy has already received significant backing within the Lagos APC.
The party's Governance Advisory Council adopted him as its consensus candidate in April, while the APC subsequently conducted its governorship primary in May, where he emerged as the party's candidate.
His running mate is Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, who was unveiled by the Lagos APC in June.
The support group said it wanted voters to give Hamzat the opportunity to build on what it described as the achievements of successive APC administrations in Lagos.
But the endorsement also raises a question that will become increasingly important as campaigning intensifies: what specific policies would a Hamzat administration introduce, and how would they address the problems Lagos residents face?
Hamzat has already spoken publicly about issues including flooding, waste management, security and residents' quality of life as part of his campaign priorities.
Women, youth and other groups urged to mobilise
Mrs Oluwafunmilayo Adejoke Koleowo, another speaker at the briefing, praised what she described as the administration's inclusion of women in politics.
She urged Nigerians across age groups to support President Tinubu and APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
She also highlighted Sonayon-James, the party's Lagos deputy governorship candidate, and expressed confidence in a strong turnout for the APC.
The appeal to women, young people and other social groups is significant because the APC support organisations are seeking to turn political endorsements into a broader grassroots campaign.
Supporters defend Tinubu's reforms
Dr Lawrence Enaholo, described at the event as a zonal coordinator of the APC Support Group Council, also called for Mr Tinubu's re-election.
He praised the administration's economic policies and argued that the president deserved more time to consolidate his reforms.
Mr Enaholo also referred to comments attributed to prominent Nigerian economists and public figures as evidence of support for the government's economic direction.
From endorsement to mobilisation
Prince Adegbenga Odofin, representing the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu, said the organisation would continue working at the grassroots to mobilise support for Mr Tinubu, Hamzat and other APC candidates.
He said the organisation would collaborate with other support groups to reach voters across communities.
The message from the speakers was consistent: the APC wants its supporters to move beyond political meetings and take its campaign directly to voters.
But an endorsement from a support group does not necessarily translate into electoral support.
The ultimate test will be whether these organisations can persuade voters who may judge the APC on issues such as household income, food prices, jobs, security, infrastructure and the quality of public services.
What happens next?
The 7 August briefing marks another step in the early mobilisation for the 2027 elections.
For the APC support groups, the immediate task is to explain the Tinubu administration's record, defend its reforms and promote Hamzat's candidacy in Lagos.
For voters, however, the more important question will be whether the claims made by political organisations are supported by evidence and whether the candidates' promises offer practical solutions to everyday problems.
With the 2027 elections still ahead, the campaign is likely to become increasingly focused not only on endorsements but also on competing records, policies and measurable commitments.
