The Ogun State Police Command has opened an investigation into allegations of farmland destruction, criminal intimidation and land-grabbing activities in Ajogbo Akia community.
The investigation follows concerns raised by the community’s traditional leadership and residents, according to a statement issued by the command on Friday, 28 August.
Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni ordered a “comprehensive investigation” to establish what happened, identify anyone responsible and determine whether criminal offences have been committed.
The police have also ordered increased patrols in Ajogbo Akia and surrounding farming areas, saying the move is intended to protect residents and farmers while the investigation continues.
Police distinguish land ownership disputes from criminal offences
The command said disputes over land ownership, title and boundaries are civil matters that should be resolved through the courts.
But it said police intervention is appropriate where an alleged land dispute involves criminal conduct.
The command specifically cited alleged malicious damage to crops, destruction of property, criminal trespass and threats to life as matters that can be reported to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
This distinction is significant because land disputes can involve both civil claims over ownership and criminal allegations arising from actions taken during the dispute.
The police did not say who owns the disputed land in Ajogbo Akia or determine whether any of the allegations made by residents are true.
Those questions will form part of the investigation.
Police deploy patrol teams
The command said it had directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers responsible for the area to deploy high-visibility patrols and intelligence personnel.
The teams are expected to operate during the day and at night around Ajogbo Akia and nearby agricultural corridors.
According to the police, the aim is to allow farmers and residents to reach their farms and carry out lawful activities without fear of violence, harassment or unlawful interference.
The command did not disclose how many officers had been deployed or give a timeline for completing the investigation.

What the police response means for residents
For farmers and residents, the immediate issue is security while the underlying land dispute is being addressed.
If investigators establish that criminal offences occurred, those responsible could face prosecution.
However, allegations alone do not establish criminal responsibility.
At the same time, people contesting land ownership cannot use the police to determine title where the dispute is fundamentally a civil matter.
Such questions must be settled through the appropriate legal process.
The police's warning against self-help also matters because land disputes can escalate when competing parties attempt to enforce their claims outside established legal channels.
Community leaders urged to cooperateThe command commended the traditional ruler of Ajogbo Akia, Baale Dr Oluwasegun Adebiyi, and other community leaders for seeking police intervention rather than resorting to violence.
The command urged residents to remain calm and provide investigators with information that could help establish the facts.
It also reiterated its position against illegal land grabbing, self-help and threats to life.
What happens next?
The key test will be the outcome of the police investigation.
Investigators will need to establish whether criminal offences were committed, identify any suspects where evidence supports such action, and distinguish those issues from any underlying civil dispute over ownership or boundaries.
For affected residents and farmers, the increased patrols offer an immediate security measure.
But they do not resolve the question of land ownership.
That issue, where it remains contested, will ultimately require determination through the appropriate legal process.
