IGP Disu Orders Rescue Operation After Niger State Worshippers Abducted

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered security forces in Niger State to intensify efforts to rescue worshippers abducted during an attack in the Dekara District of Borgu Local Government Area.

Disu gave the order during a visit to Niger State on Saturday, 29 August, as security agencies continued operations to locate the victims and identify those responsible for the attack.

The police have not disclosed the number of people abducted, the identity of the attackers or whether any of the victims have been rescued.

Why the IGP's visit matters

The visit comes as concerns grow over attacks and abductions in parts of Niger State, where insecurity has affected rural communities and placed pressure on security agencies.

At the Niger State Government House, Disu met Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, and the state's Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Bello Magaji.

According to the police, the IGP conveyed condolences to the victims' families and said rescuing the abducted people and arresting those responsible remained the priority.

The police did not provide operational details that could compromise the rescue effort.

Police ordered to improve intelligence and coordination

Disu also directed the Niger State Police Command to strengthen intelligence gathering and coordinate more closely with other security agencies and local communities.

He specifically called for stronger engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders and community representatives.

That approach reflects a wider challenge facing security agencies in Nigeria: attacks in remote areas can be difficult to prevent when security forces have limited information about the movement and activities of armed groups.

The IGP also told officers to prioritise the safety of victims and affected communities during rescue operations.

Government promises continued support

During the meeting, the police said Disu commended Niger State for supporting the command with operational vehicles, repairs to armourers personnel carriers and welfare assistance for officers.

The police also said Force Headquarters would continue to support the state command with logistics, mobility, intelligence, training and operational resources.

These are commitments rather than evidence of immediate improvements on the ground.

Their effectiveness will depend on whether additional resources translate into faster intelligence gathering, response times and successful rescue operations.

The Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, praised the IGP for visiting the state and said the government would continue supporting the police and other security agencies.

Traditional rulers brought into security response

Disu also met the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Dr Umar Farouk Bahago, CON.

The meeting focused on cooperation between traditional institutions and security agencies, particularly in intelligence gathering and community engagement.

Traditional rulers often have direct links with rural communities and can provide security agencies with local information.

But closer cooperation also requires safeguards to protect residents and sources who share sensitive information.

What happens next?

The immediate test for the security agencies is whether the abducted worshippers can be located and brought home safely.

Authorities also face pressure to establish who carried out the attack and whether those responsible can be arrested and prosecuted.

For residents of affected communities, the bigger question is whether the latest security response will prevent another attack rather than simply respond after one has occurred.

The police have promised continued operations, but the force has not given a timeline for the rescue effort or released further details about the victims.

The situation therefore remains developing, with the safety of the abducted worshippers and the outcome of the ongoing operations likely to determine the next stage of the story.
