Reuben Fasoranti Dies at 100 as Aiyedatiwa Pays Tribute
Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the 100-year-old Afenifere leader and former Ondo State finance commissioner, has died, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has announced. His death raises questions about the future of the Yoruba socio-political organisation.

Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, has died at the age of 100, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has announced.

The governor confirmed his death in a condolence statement dated 20 October 2026, describing the centenarian as a figure whose contributions to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria would be remembered.

Fasoranti turned 100 on 11 May 2026, drawing tributes from President Bola Tinubu and other political leaders who recognised his contributions to education, public service and Nigeria’s democratic development.

His death marks the loss of a prominent voice in Yoruba socio-political affairs, particularly within Afenifere, the organisation associated with the political philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

What the governor said

In his statement, Aiyedatiwa said: “With a heavy heart but with total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing of our revered elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who departed this world at the glorious age of 100.”

The governor described Fasoranti as “a patriarch, a beacon of wisdom, integrity and selfless service whose century-long life was marked by uncommon commitment to the development of our dear State, Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.”

He added: “His counsel, fatherly guidance and principled stand on issues of justice and good governance will be sorely missed. He lived a fulfilled life and left indelible footprints of honour and legacy for generations to come.”

Aiyedatiwa said his government shared in the grief of the deceased’s family and the wider community.

“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Ondo State, I commiserate with the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom and the entire State over this great loss.”

He concluded: “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

The governor’s statement did not disclose the circumstances of Fasoranti’s death or provide details of his funeral arrangements.

A life spanning Nigeria’s political history

Fasoranti’s life covered major periods in Nigeria’s political development, from the years before independence through military rule and the country’s return to democratic government in 1999.

He was an educationist and politician who followed Awolowo’s political tradition and became one of the prominent figures associated with Afenifere.

According to a biography published by the Nigerian Television Authority in May 2026, Fasoranti studied at the University College, Ibadan, now the University of Ibadan, and pursued further education in the United Kingdom and Australia.

He taught and worked in school administration before establishing educational institutions in Akure, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St Frances Academy in Igoba.

His work in education formed an important part of his public-service record, with the schools providing a lasting institutional link between his career and the community.

Fasoranti also served as commissioner for finance in the government of the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983.

His political career included participation in the Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria, parties associated with Awolowo’s political movement.

Why his death matters to Afenifere and Yoruba politics

Fasoranti’s death raises questions about the future of leadership and continuity within Afenifere, an organisation that has played a prominent role in debates about Yoruba interests, restructuring, federalism and governance in Nigeria.

His position gave him a place in a generation of political figures whose influence extended beyond elected office.

However, the extent to which his passing will change the organisation’s political direction will depend on its leadership arrangements, internal cohesion and ability to sustain its influence in national debates.

Afenifere’s future leadership and public positions will therefore be important developments to watch in the coming days.

The organisation’s own formal response and any announcement about succession or leadership arrangements would help clarify the immediate implications of the loss.

His legacy in education and public service

Fasoranti’s educational work offers a tangible way to assess his legacy beyond the tributes that often accompany the death of a prominent public figure.

Schools associated with his career and educational initiatives represent institutions through which his influence may continue, although their present performance and long-term impact require separate assessment.

His public-service career also provides a basis for examining the policies and administrative decisions associated with his time in government.

While Aiyedatiwa praised Fasoranti’s commitment to integrity and good governance, such assessments remain the governor’s characterisation of the deceased. A fuller historical evaluation would draw on records of his public service, contemporary accounts and the experiences of people affected by his work.

What happens next?

The immediate priorities are expected to include arrangements by the family for the funeral, tributes from political and community leaders, and a formal response from Afenifere.

The Ondo State Government may also announce any official mourning arrangements or state honours, although the governor’s statement did not confirm such measures.

For the family and community, the death marks the end of a century-long life. For Afenifere and Nigeria’s political landscape, the next challenge will be how its institutions preserve the ideas, relationships and public influence associated with one of its most prominent leaders.

Further details about the cause of death, funeral plans and the organisation’s leadership arrangements should be reported when the family or relevant authorities confirm them.
