Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71
Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at 71, according to his family. He governed the oil-producing state from 2007 to 2015 after serving as commissioner for health and secretary to the state government.

Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, his family has announced.

Uduaghan died on the morning of Monday, 19 October 2026, according to a statement signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan on behalf of the family.

The family announced his death in a statement expressing grief over the loss of the former governor, who served the state in several public offices before leading it for eight years.

“It is with hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow that we announce the passing to glory of our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Patriarch,” the family said.

“His passing has left us devastated. Words can hardly express the depth of our sorrow at the loss of a man who meant so much to our family and whose life and service touched countless others across Delta State and Nigeria,” the statement read.

From medicine to government

Uduaghan was a medical doctor before entering public service. He served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 under former governor James Ibori.

He became Secretary to the State Government in 2003, a position he held until 2007, when he became governor.

Uduaghan governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He won re-election in 2011 and completed two terms in office.

His career placed him at the centre of the state’s healthcare administration and executive decision-making for more than a decade.

What his years in office mean for Delta State

Uduaghan’s death brings renewed attention to his administration’s record on healthcare, infrastructure and public services.

The family described him as “a source of strength, a father figure, a beloved brother and uncle, and a respected elder”.

It also said his years in public service demonstrated a commitment to the human and infrastructural development of Delta State.

However, the family’s tribute reflects its assessment of his life and service. A comprehensive assessment of his administration would require independent evidence of projects delivered, public spending, healthcare outcomes and the long-term effects of its policies.

Such an assessment would help residents understand what changed during his tenure, which commitments were fulfilled and what challenges remained for subsequent administrations.

Delta State is an oil-producing state, making the management of public revenue, infrastructure delivery and access to essential services important areas for assessing successive governments.

Family mourns former governor

The family said Uduaghan’s death was a major loss to his relatives and the wider public.

“His passing is a profound loss to our family, the people of Delta State, and Nigeria at large,” the statement said.

The family prayed for the repose of his soul and for comfort for relatives, friends, associates and others mourning his death.

Uduaghan’s death is expected to prompt tributes from political associates, public officials and residents whose lives and communities were affected by his time in office.

Further details about funeral arrangements and official responses were not included in the announcement provided for this report.

As tributes emerge, a fuller account of Uduaghan’s legacy will depend not only on the memories of those who worked with him but also on the public record of his administration and its lasting impact on Delta State.
