Ogun State Police say they have arrested two men suspected of belonging to an armed robbery and vehicle-snatching gang, months after a stolen Toyota Matrix was recovered in Lagos.
Police identified the suspects as Adeyinka Onakomaya, 46, and Olayiwola Kehinde, 48.
They said officers also recovered three locally made pistols and 18 live cartridges during follow-up operations.
The arrests are linked to an earlier robbery at De-Ultimate Hotel on the Sokoto/Badagry Road in Atan-Ota.
Police said the latest suspects were tracked to separate hideouts in the Babaode area along Idiroko Road, Ota, and in the Command area of Lagos State.
How the investigation began
The case dates back to 18 February 2026, when armed robbers reportedly attacked the hotel at about 01:30.
The attackers allegedly stole valuables from a guest, Joseph Bankole, and hotel staff, including an unregistered red Toyota Matrix.
In April, police said their Anti-Robbery Unit traced and recovered the vehicle in Lagos. Two car dealers were also arrested in connection with that investigation.The latest arrests appear to be a further development in the same investigation.However, the police statement issued on 19 August describes the initial vehicle recovery as an April incident without giving the exact date.

Police allege wider robbery network
According to the Ogun Police Command, preliminary investigations indicate that Onakomaya and Kehinde allegedly worked with other members of a gang involved in the February robbery.
Police also allege that the suspects participated in other armed robberies and vehicle snatchings in Ota, Iju, Babaode and Atan.
The Command said detectives recovered the three pistols and 18 cartridges during searches following the arrests.
It added that the two suspects allegedly admitted involvement in several robbery offences and were providing information to investigators.
Those claims have not been independently established in court.
The suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence unless convicted.Police said they were pursuing other members of the alleged gang who remain at large.
Ogun has recorded several robbery arrests this year
The arrests come after a series of similar operations by the Ogun Police Command in recent months.
In May, police arrested two suspected armed robbers and recovered three stolen vehicles in the Ifo and Sango areas. The operation followed investigations into vehicle snatching and armed robbery.
In June, the Command announced the arrest of three suspects linked to alleged armed robbery and vehicle theft around Abeokuta. Police recovered a stolen Toyota Corolla in that operation.
Later that month, police reported seven arrests in separate operations involving alleged armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, cultism and other offences. They also reported recovering a stolen Toyota Venza and three firearms.
The pattern highlights the challenge posed by vehicle theft and robbery networks operating across state boundaries, particularly around Ogun's busy corridors linking the state with Lagos and other parts of south-west Nigeria.
What the arrests mean for residents
The recovery of firearms and ammunition could disrupt the alleged gang if investigators can establish how the weapons were obtained and identify other members of the network.
But arrests alone do not establish guilt. The key test will be whether investigators can gather admissible evidence and prosecutors can build cases strong enough to withstand scrutiny in court.
The development also shows why follow-up investigations matter in robbery cases. The recovery of a stolen vehicle can provide leads that may eventually identify people suspected of organising or participating in the original crime.
The Ogun Police Command has previously reported substantial numbers of arrests and recoveries. In the first quarter of 2025, it said it arrested 42 suspected armed robbers, recovered 40 firearms and 177 rounds of ammunition, and recovered 26 stolen vehicles.
Those figures, however, should not be interpreted as proof that robbery has fallen or risen without comparable and independently verified crime data for the same period.
What happens next?
Police say they are continuing efforts to arrest other alleged members of the group.The suspects are expected to face further investigation before any decision on prosecution. The police have not stated when they will be charged in court.

For residents, the immediate issue is whether the arrests lead to more recoveries and prosecutions, and whether the investigation can establish a clear link between the suspects, the recovered weapons and the series of robberies police have attributed to the alleged syndicate.
