Delta State Gets New Police Commissioner as Samuel Erale Takes Charge

The Nigeria Police Force has appointed CP Samuel Etaifo Erale as the new Commissioner of Police in Delta State, with the senior officer assuming command of the state police command.

Eralе takes over from CP Yemi John Oyeniyi and becomes the 25th Commissioner of Police in Delta State.

His appointment comes as the state continues to face the challenges of violent crime, communal tensions, cult-related violence, kidnapping and other security concerns that require both effective policing and public cooperation.

The Delta State Police Command announced the change in a statement issued on 31 August by its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe.

Who is the new commissioner?

Erale was born on 2 March 1968 at Pedro Police Barracks in Shomolu, Lagos State, and comes from Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a member of Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police Course 18, after obtaining a BSc in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1992.

His career has included operational, administrative, investigative and command roles across several police formations and state commands.

He has served in Kogi, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers and Osun states, as well as at Zone 7 Headquarters and Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Experience in tactical policing

One of the defining features of Erale's career is his long service with the Police Mobile Force.

The command says he spent 14 years in the PMF and served as a squadron commander for nine years.

His postings included command of MOPOL 33 in Ekiti State and MOPOL 26 in Akwa Ibom, as well as other operational roles.

He also served with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Kosovo in 2000.

His international and tactical experience includes training in small arms and explosives at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Gaborone, Botswana, and peace-support training at the National Defence College.

Osun election role

Eralе's appointment also follows a recent national security assignment.

He served as Commissioner of Police responsible for elections during the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

The Delta command described the election as one of the more peaceful and successful off-cycle elections in recent times.

That assessment is the police command's characterisation and should not be taken as an independent assessment of the election without evidence from election observers and other stakeholders.

His deployment to Delta was approved in August while he was still carrying out the Osun election assignment.

What does his arrival mean for Delta?

The change in command gives Erale responsibility for policing a state with a complex security environment.

Delta combines major urban centres with oil-producing communities, waterways and rural areas.

Security concerns in such environments can require conventional policing, intelligence gathering, community engagement and specialised operations.

His previous roles suggest that tactical operations will be an important part of his policing background.

However, experience alone will not determine whether his tenure improves security.

Residents will ultimately judge the new command by measurable outcomes such as reductions in violent crime, faster police response, successful investigations, respect for due process and stronger relations between the police and communities.

Beyond tactical policingErale has also worked in police administration and personnel management.

He served in the Promotions Section of the Office of the Force Secretary at different ranks and later worked at the Special Investigation Unit of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja.

Before his promotion to commissioner, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of administration in Rivers State from 2022 to 2026.

He later served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Community Safety and Crime Prevention at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

That background could be significant in Delta, where effective policing will depend not only on arrests and tactical deployments but also on police-community relations and crime prevention.

Training and professional affiliations

The new commissioner is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Institute of Police Studies.

His listed training includes an Advanced Detective Course in 1999, tactical leadership and command training in 2014, a peace-support course in 2015 and a strategic and senior command course in 2021.

The command described him as a "tested and trusted operational commander" and said his career has been marked by professionalism, discipline and commitment to public safety.

Those are assessments made by the police command rather than independently verified findings.

What happens next?

The immediate challenge for Erale will be to set out his priorities for Delta and demonstrate how his previous operational experience will translate into better security for residents.

The public will also expect transparency on police operations, accountability for officers, protection of citizens' rights and meaningful engagement with communities.

His tenure will therefore be measured less by his résumé and more by what changes residents experience on the ground.

For now, Erale has taken over command.

The next stage will be to see what security strategy he adopts and whether it produces measurable improvements across Delta State.
