Police in Ogun State have arrested a 20-year-old man over the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman in Ijebu-Igbo.
The Ogun State Police Command said a second suspect, identified as Boye Balogun, is wanted in connection with the incident.
According to the police, the alleged assault happened on 30 August at the victim's residence in Odo Idiocy Scale, Oke Sopen, Ijebu-Igbo.
The victim's mother reported the case at the Ijebu-Igbo police station at about 10:10am on Tuesday, 1 September, the command said.
Police identified the arrested suspect as Ayomide Kamula, 20.
They said he remains in custody while investigators search for the second suspect.
The police have not disclosed the circumstances that led to the alleged assault or said whether the suspects knew the victim before the incident.
Investigation and medical examination
The command said officers visited and secured the reported crime scene after receiving the complaint and began collecting evidence.
It also said officers took the victim to a general hospital for medical examination using a police medical form.
Medical examination can provide evidence that may assist a rape investigation, although its findings alone do not determine whether an offence occurred.
The case is now being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The police have not announced any charges or court appearance in the case.
The allegations have therefore not been tested before a court.
Police promise further action
Ogun State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni condemned the alleged attack and said sexual and gender-based violence would not be tolerated.
“The CP reiterated the Command's firm commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against sexual offences across the state.”
He also assured the victim's family and the public that investigators would conduct a “thorough, discreet investigation” and pursue the suspect who remains at large.
The police have urged residents with credible information about the fleeing suspect to contact the command.

Ogun already has sexual assault support centres
The case comes as Ogun has expanded its response to sexual and gender-based violence.
The state commissioned a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in Ijebu-Ode in December 2024, adding to existing support facilities for survivors.
The state government said the centre was designed to provide medical, psychosocial and legal support.
The state also announced additional toll-free lines in 2025 to improve access to support services through its sexual assault referral centres.
A directory of Nigerian sexual assault referral centres lists facilities in Ogun, including the SARC at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, and the Ijebu-Ode SARC.
That support matters because a sexual assault investigation does not end with an arrest.
Survivors may require medical treatment, psychological support, legal assistance and protection while investigators build a case.
What happens next?
Investigators are expected to establish what happened, examine available forensic and other evidence, obtain statements and determine the respective roles of the two suspects.
The immediate priority is also to locate Balogun, who the police say remains at large.
Any eventual prosecution will have to establish the allegations in court.
Until then, both suspects are presumed innocent unless and until a court determines otherwise.
The case will therefore test not only the police's ability to locate the second suspect, but also how effectively investigators, medical professionals and prosecutors can preserve evidence and protect the survivor through the legal process.
